Fly fishing for brown trout is one of the hilights of trout stream ...
Fly fishing for brown trout is one of the hilights of trout stream anglers. Stalking rising and cruising brown trout takes on a whole new level of fly fishing in ...trout streams. Add overhead cover like heavy bushes or instream logs and troughs & undercut banks and the engagement is intense and intimate. In this video we look at prospecting all these habitat features and how we prospect brown trout with terrestrials. Pay close attention as the discussion is laden with subtle fly fishing trout stream tips.

We travel to Patagonia in search of back country rivers to dry fly fish with big foam beetle patterns. The rainbow trout were alive this day, keyed into anything landing on the way and traveling through the water to hammer our big foam beetle patterns. It was simply beetle mania dry fly fishing. The peak of summer sees the best terrestrial dry fly fishing and we timed this day perfectly!

“Bench-marked” pays homage to friend Grant Bench. Funny tale behind the scenes is that Grant was in Calgary last fall and was supposed to meet us to fish the Bow ...River. He never showed up at our meeting location but we waited for 2 1/2 hours, fishing the run near the boat launch. We caught 7 browns and rainbows in the run beside the launch, with three of them 6 to 7 pounds. Grant wasn’t thrilled to hear that as you can imagine. You never like to hear when you miss something epic. Grant went home to the US but mailed us some flies to take and try in New Zealand last winter. In his collection was a little emerging caddis pattern as you’ll see in this video, which we've aptly named “Bench-Marked”.
A few things to look at in this video: when the fish refuses the larger sedge pattern, I don’t cast to it. I wait for it to move back home, station, and get comfortable once again. What you don’t see is 5 minutes in time where I deliberately change my fly to a smaller pattern. It’s a tactic we use on fish that have refused. Force a break / rest by tying on new tippet or a different fly, and go with a smaller pattern. In the time it takes to change something or to eat a snack, the fish is usually rested and back feeding, less wary and skittish. The other thing to watch is how side pressure is applied to the fish to systematically pull it with consistent pressure from the current into a calm pocket. It’s only when the fish is coming into the soft pocket and coming to me, facing the net, that I lift the rod to get its head up to net it. Lifting any time sooner and the fish would respond to being lifted, bolting back out to the current and into the rapid downstream, which isn’t good. But all turned out well. 🙂[+] Show More

Fishing for winter steelhead is best described by Bill McMillan, fisherman and author of "Dry Line Steelhead" describes winter as being the most difficult of seasons ...for searching of steelhead on the fly. The mere challenge of nature's moody elements, the cold weather as snow and rain, and the limited daylight draws only those anglers who are seeking to experience something beyond the mere fishing itself, even beyond the hooking of the magnificent fish. Winter steelhead evoke a sort of reverence because, in short, they are extremely hard to come by. All the elements surrounding the steelhead become even more epic when placed in the severity of winter. Therefore, the preparation, the adventure from sunup to sundown and the struggle of the search for this evocative strain of steelhead in winter conditions is what I tried to capture in this T-Motion Theater "Winter Run".

HATCH - BIG SKY PMDs - Montana Spring Creek Fly Fishing by Todd Moen

Each July, I find myself heading back to my home state of Montana. Over the past 15 years, many of these trips have included an adventure with my good friend ...and master spring creek angler, Pete Corbett who is owner of Creekside Angling Company in Issaquah, Washington. We like to fish the Southwest region of the state. For this 2013 fly fishing trip, we met in Dillon, Montana. This time Pete fished some of our favorite public water, and we hit the PMD hatch that usually occurs in late June and early July. We were in the right place at the right time! The PMDs popped, coming off in thick numbers, with fish hungry and aggressively rising to chow down on the first big hatch of the summer. The second half of this video shoot was taken on a one-day walk/wade of McCoy's Spring Creek, and we had some pretty good action there as well. Southwest Montana never lets me down!

Fly Fishing England - Buckingham Trout by Todd Moen

When I was invited by Tim Rajeff, of Rajeff Sports, to film on England’s River Esk and the historic chalk stream, River Avon, I could not resist. This is the ...birthplace of dry fly fishing, an area of rich traditions and history, from the sword to the modern fly rod. On this trip, I met up with Tim's colleagues from Airflo, spey casters Richard Wothers and Gareth Jones. Fishing in the shadow of castles and in brilliant green pastures, these anglers stalk and catch grayling, rainbow and brown trout, all feasting on mayflies. This film highlights the history and sacred rules of England’s famous dry fly fishing heritage. Thanks to Airflo, Patagonia and Rajeff Sports for making this film happen. It was, for me, a religious experience and one I'll never forget.
